The complete path of a web request

The fourth chapter follows what happens between the address typed into the address bar and the page appearing on the screen. We go through name resolution, building the TCP and TLS connection, the HTTP versions, the limits of HTTPS protection, intermediaries and CDNs, and then string the whole path together into a single process. At the end of the chapter we look at where delay and errors arise, and how to infer the right layer from a symptom.
